1. How high is Mount Rinjani?
Mount Rinjani stands at an elevation of 3,726 meters (12,224 feet) above mean sea level (AMSL), making it the second-highest volcano in Indonesia.
2. When is Mount Rinjani open for trekking?
Mount Rinjani National Park is open for trekking for 9 months each year, from April to December.
The park is closed from January to March due to the heavy monsoon rains, which make the trails unsafe. However, trekking may also be restricted if there is increased volcanic activity. The National Park Authority monitors conditions and provides updates accordingly.
3. When is the best time to climb Mount Rinjani?
The ideal time to trek Mount Rinjani is between May and October during the dry season. However, due to climate changes, weather patterns can vary. It is recommended to check the local weather forecast before planning your trip.
4. What are the temperatures at Mount Rinjani?
Temperature varies depending on elevation and time of day:
- Summit (3,726m): 0 – 3°C (before sunrise)
- Crater Rim (2,639m – 2,641m): 8 – 10°C (nighttime)
- Lake Segara Anak & Campsites: 8 – 12°C
- Daytime temperature (all locations): 28 – 35°C
5. Is it safe to climb Mount Rinjani?
Yes, as long as climbers follow safety guidelines and stay on the designated trails. Accidents typically occur when individuals stray from the marked paths or do not adhere to guide instructions. We strongly recommend trekking with a professional guide and porters for safety and comfort.
6. What should I bring for the trek?
Here is a recommended packing list:
- Essential gear: Torch/Flashlight, trekking shoes, trekking poles
- Clothing: Windproof jacket, long trek pants, T-shirts, shorts, small towel
- Personal items: Sunblock, hat/cap, sunglasses, toiletries, insect repellent
- Optional items: Camera, binoculars, fishing gear, swimming suit, plastic bags for garbage
7. Do I need a trekking stick?
Yes, trekking poles are highly recommended, especially for the summit climb, as the loose volcanic soil makes it slippery. Trekking poles can be rented for IDR 50,000 per pair.
8. What are the popular trekking routes in 2024?
Following trail repairs after the 2018 earthquake, the most recommended trekking routes are:
- Sembalun Route (best for summit access)
- Senaru Route (best for lake and crater views)
- Torean Route (scenic valley and waterfall views)
9. Which starting point should I choose?
- Sembalun Route: Best for reaching the summit; features savanna landscapes
- Senaru Route: Ideal for those wanting to explore the lake and hot springs

10. What is the difference between the 2-day and 3-day trek?
- 2-Day Sembalun Trek: Best for summiting Mount Rinjani. This route crosses open savanna with no forest cover.
- 2-Day Senaru Trek: Focuses on enjoying Segara Anak Lake and hot springs. The trail passes through 80% rainforest.
- 3-Day Trek (Sembalun or Senaru): Allows for more exploration of both the summit and the lake.
11. What is the difference between the 3-day and 4-day trek?
Both options follow the same route. However, in the 4-day trek, you will stay overnight at Segara Anak Lake, allowing more time to relax and explore the hot springs and surrounding areas. The 3-day trek only includes a short break at the lake for lunch and a quick dip before continuing the journey.
12. How much is the Rinjani entrance fee?
- Foreigners: IDR 200,000 per person per day
- Indonesian citizens: IDR 20,000 per person per day
13. Is the entrance fee included in the trekking package?
Yes, when you book with Green Rinjani, we include the entrance fee in the package. We will also handle the online registration required by the national park.
14. Can I do a day hike to the summit?
No, reaching the summit requires at least 2 days and 1 night. However, if you have limited time, you can do a one-day trek to the Crater Rim via Senaru.
15. Is it possible to catch a flight on the same day as the descent?
We do not recommend scheduling a flight on the same day you descend, as delays due to weather, injuries, or trail conditions could cause you to miss your flight.
16. Should I buy travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is highly recommended. While the national park provides basic emergency evacuation, your insurance should cover:
- Accidents
- Medical emergencies
- Lost luggage
- Trip cancellations or delays

We offer two types of services:
- Deluxe Service: Private tour with higher-quality equipment, better food, and more comfortable sleeping arrangements.
- Standard Service: Group trek (max. 6 people per group), with basic camping gear.
19. Can I upgrade my accommodation before the trek?
Yes! You can choose to stay at a premium hotel like Rinjani Lodge for an additional USD 70 per room.
20. Is hotel pick-up and transfer included?
Yes, our trekking package includes return transfers from:
- Lombok International Airport
- Kuta Lombok
- Tetebatu
- Mataram
- Senggigi
- Bangsal
Additional charges apply for pickups from locations like Gili Islands, Sekotong, and Selong Belanak.
21. Can I trek Mount Rinjani without a guide?
No. Guided trekking is mandatory. The national park requires climbers to hire a licensed guide for safety reasons.
22. How many people will be in my tent?
- 2 people per tent (if booking as a pair)
- 3 people = 2 tents
23. Do porters carry my backpack?
No, porters only carry logistics and camping equipment. If you need a porter for personal luggage, you can hire one for USD 25 per day (max 20kg).
24. Where can I leave my extra luggage?
You can store it at our Senaru office for safekeeping.
