Mount Rinjani Trekking Routes 2025 – Best Trails via Sembalun, Senaru & Torean

Rinjani trekking route comparison –Recommended Options for 2026
After the 2018 earthquake that struck Lombok Island, several sections of Mount Rinjani’s trekking trails were temporarily closed due to landslides. Since then, the trails have been repaired, upgraded, and declared safe for trekking by the Rinjani National Park authority. Some sections are now steeper or slightly different from before, but the views remain as breathtaking as ever.

If you’re planning to trek Mount Rinjani in 2025, here’s a guide to the three most recommended routes: Sembalun, Senaru, and Torean. Each offers a unique perspective and level of challenge, suited for different trekking preferences and fitness levels.

  1. Sembalun trekking routes
  2. Senaru trekking routes
  3. Torean trekking routes

1. Sembalun Route – Best for Summit Treks
Highlights:

  1. Best access to Mount Rinjani summit (3,726m)
  2. Expansive savanna landscapes
  3. Spectacular sunrise views from the summit
  4. Summit reached on Day 2 of most programs
  5. Starting Elevation: 1,100 meters
  6. Camping Area: Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639m)
Recommended Programs: 2D1N Summit, 3D2N Summit + Lake, 4D3N Full Trek

Trek Overview:
Treks via Sembalun begin in open grassland and savanna before reaching steep volcanic terrain. Hikers pass through 4 main rest posts before reaching Pelawangan Sembalun (Sembalun Crater Rim) — the basecamp for summit climbers.

Rest Points on the Way to Sembalun Crater Rim:

  • Pos 1 (1,300m)
  • Pos 2 – Tengengean (1,500m)
  • Pos 3 – Pada Balong (1,800m)
  • Pos 4 (2,100m)
  • Pelawangan Sembalun (2,639m) – campsite with stunning views of Mount Rinjani’s summit and Lake Segara Anak.

Challenges:

Regret Hill (Bukit Penyesalan) — a steep climb of up to 60° slope before the crater rim.
Cold temperatures and strong wind at the crater rim (bring proper gear).

Who is this for?
Recommended for fit and experienced hikers aiming to reach the Rinjani summit.
Not ideal for those with knee problems or altitude sensitivity.

2. Senaru Route – Best for Crater Rim & Rainforest Experience
Highlights:

  • Lush tropical rainforest
  • Stunning sunset views from Senaru Crater Rim
  • Easier descent from the lake
  • Cultural starting point (Senaru is home to traditional Sasak villages)
  • Starting Elevation: 600 meters
  • Camping Area: Senaru Crater Rim (2,600m)
  • Recommended Programs: 2D1N Crater Rim, 3D2N Lake, 4D3N Summit & Lake

Trek Overview:
This route is ideal for those looking to experience the Senaru Crater Rim or to descend from the lake after ascending via Sembalun. The trail leads through dense jungle rich in flora and fauna. Black monkeys (lutung) and playful macaques are commonly seen.

Key Points Along the Trail:

  1. Pos 1 (750m)
  2. Pos 2 (1,500m)
  3. Pos 3 (2,000m) – breaching the tree line
  4. Senaru Crater Rim (2,600m)

The final climb is a steep 45° section over volcanic gravel and loose scree. If descending from the lake, trekkers will face a slippery slope — good footwear and trekking poles are highly recommended.

Important Note:
While reaching the summit via Senaru is technically possible, it is not recommended. Summit access is much easier via Sembalun. Most summit programs start in Sembalun and end in Senaru for a more balanced experience.

Who is this for?

  • Great for beginners or short treks (2D1N Crater Rim)
  • Also suitable for descent from the lake or summit
  • Ideal for nature lovers who prefer jungle over open savanna

Recommended Programs: 3D2N Lake, 4D3N Summit + Lake via Torean

The Torean Trail is the most scenic but longest route. It was originally used by locals and has become popular post-earthquake due to its gradual incline and lake access. The trail winds along riverbanks, ravines, and cliffs — offering photo-worthy landscapes throughout.
