Trail Conditions — What to Expect

The Rinjani Summit Trek 4 Days 3 Nights presents a diverse range of landscapes and trail conditions, carefully structured to support gradual acclimatization while still delivering a physically demanding and deeply rewarding adventure on Mount Rinjani.

Day 1 — Senaru Village to Senaru Crater Rim
The trek begins through dense, shaded tropical rainforest with a steady but manageable elevation gain. The forest canopy helps keep temperatures cooler and humidity balanced, making this first day ideal for easing the body into the trek and starting the acclimatization process naturally.

Day 2 — Senaru Crater Rim to Segara Anak Lake
This day involves a steep descent toward Segara Anak Lake, with rocky, uneven, and sometimes dusty terrain. Extra care is required, especially during dry conditions, as footing can be unstable. Trekking poles are helpful for balance and knee support on the downhill sections.

Day 3 — Segara Anak Lake to Sembalun Crater Rim
A long and physically demanding ascent characterizes this stage. The trail features loose volcanic rocks, narrow paths, and sustained uphill sections. Strong stamina, controlled pacing, and mental focus are essential to complete this day comfortably and safely.

Summit Push & Exit — Day 4
The summit attempt starts before sunrise across steep volcanic scree—loose sand and gravel that require careful step placement. After reaching the summit, trekkers descend via wide open savanna terrain toward Sembalun Village. The descent is long and exposed, making proper footwear and trekking poles highly recommended.

This program is best suited for trekkers with good physical fitness and prior hiking experience. It is not recommended for guests with severe vertigo, recurring altitude sickness, serious knee issues, or a strong fear of heights, as several sections involve steep drops and exposed terrain.

Overall Trail Character

The Senaru to Sembalun route on Mount Rinjani is defined by its progressive difficulty, diverse terrain, and natural rhythm of acclimatization, making it one of the most complete summit routes on the mountain.

The trail begins

with cool, shaded rainforest paths featuring firm soil and moderate gradients, allowing trekkers to warm up gradually while conserving energy. As elevation increases, the environment opens into exposed crater rims with rocky surfaces, steep descents, and dramatic volcanic landscapes that demand careful footing and steady pacing.

Midway through the trek, the route drops into the caldera, where lower altitudes, lakeside terrain, and geothermal hot springs provide a rare opportunity for physical recovery before the final ascent. This natural reset point plays a key role in making the overall trek more manageable despite its length.

The final stages are characterized by loose volcanic scree

narrow trails, and long open savanna descents, requiring strong legs, good balance, and mental focus—especially during the summit push and exit day. Weather exposure increases at higher elevations, and conditions can change quickly, reinforcing the need for proper equipment and guidance.

Overall, this route is physically demanding but well-paced, best suited for trekkers with good fitness who want a safe, scenic, and deeply rewarding journey from rainforest to summit, without rushing any part of the Mount Rinjani experience.

Why Planting Trees and Why GREEN Rinjani?

Together with our guests, Green Rinjani actively contributes to environmental protection through tree planting and eco-trekking initiatives around Mount Rinjani.

GREEN Rinjani is not just a name—it reflects our long-term commitment to responsible trekking. Through optional tree planting and regular mountain clean-up programs, we ensure that every trek gives back to the environment and local communities.

Estimated Driving Times

  • Lombok International Airport / Lembar Harbor: ±3.5 hours
  • Mataram / Senggigi: ±2 hours
  • Bangsal Harbor: ±1 hour 25 minutes
  • Kuta Lombok or Tetebatu: ±4 hours

Accommodation Before the Trek

You will stay overnight in a comfortable private room in Senaru, featuring mountain views, a private bathroom, and breakfast included. In the evening, your trekking guide will meet you for a full briefing, route explanation, and equipment check, ensuring everything is well-prepared before the adventure begins.

The first day of trekking begins in Senaru Village with a relaxed morning preparation at your accommodation. After breakfast, you’ll meet your trekking guide for a final equipment check and safety briefing, ensuring everyone is ready for the ascent on Mount Rinjani.

At approximately 07:00 AM, you will be transferred to the trekking starting point at around 800 meters above sea level. The hike starts gently through village plantations, passing coffee trees, cacao plants, and bamboo groves, before gradually entering dense tropical rainforest.

As the trail moves deeper into the forest, the ascent becomes steady and continuous. From early to late morning, you trek through shaded rainforest toward Pos 2 (Montong Satas – 1,500 m). The path consists of natural forest steps, exposed tree roots, and occasional rocky sections. Along the way, it’s common to encounter black monkeys, tropical birds, butterflies, and a wide variety of native vegetation.

Upon reaching Pos 2, your guide prepares light refreshments such as fresh fruit and soft drinks. After a short rest, the trek continues uphill toward Pos 3 (Mondokan Lolak – 2,000 m). This section remains mostly shaded and cooler, offering comfortable walking conditions. During the dry season (June–August), wild strawberries can sometimes be found growing naturally along the trail.

Lunch at Pos 3

A hot lunch is served at Pos 3, followed by a longer rest of approximately 1.5 hours to restore energy before the final ascent of the day.

In the afternoon, the trail becomes noticeably steeper as you make the last climb toward Senaru Crater Rim. This section requires steady pacing and focus but is rewarded with increasingly dramatic views as you approach the campsite.

Arrival at Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m) is typically between 3:30 and 4:00 PM, depending on group pace. From the campsite, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Segara Anak Lake, Mount Barujari, Mount Agung in Bali, and—on clear days—the Gili Islands. Dinner is prepared at camp, followed by an overnight rest at one of Mount Rinjani’s most scenic and memorable viewpoints.

Overview — Day 1

  • Distance: ±9.2 km
  • Estimated Trekking Time: 6–7 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to Challenging
  • Highest Altitude: 2,641 meters (Senaru Crater Rim)
  • Elevation Gain: ±2,040 meters

This day focuses on a steady forest ascent and gradual acclimatization, leading from Senaru Village through tropical rainforest to the panoramic campsite at the Senaru Crater Rim on Mount Rinjani.

Activities on Day 2 — Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner on the Mountain

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The second day begins early at Senaru Crater Rim, where you will wake up to a breathtaking sunrise overlooking Segara Anak Lake and the volcanic landscape below. Morning temperatures are cool and refreshing, creating the perfect atmosphere to enjoy the view before starting the descent.

After breakfast at the campsite, the trek continues downward into the Rinjani caldera. This section of the trail is steeper than the previous day and requires careful footing, especially on rocky and dusty sections. Your guide will set a steady pace to ensure safety and comfort throughout the descent.

The walk down to Segara Anak Lake (approximately 2,000 meters above sea level) takes around two hours. As you descend, the scenery changes dramatically from open crater rim views to the enclosed volcanic basin surrounding the lake. Upon arrival at the lakeside, lunch is prepared by the Green Rinjani team.

In the afternoon, you will walk approximately 20 minutes to reach the natural hot springs, one of the highlights of this itinerary. Here, you can soak in warm mineral-rich water, known for helping relax tired muscles after the descent. After visiting the hot springs, you have free time to enjoy the lake area — swimming, resting, taking photos, or simply appreciating the calm and remote atmosphere.

The day ends with an overnight camp beside Segara Anak Lake, widely regarded as one of the most peaceful and beautiful camping locations on Mount Rinjani. Dinner is served at camp, followed by a restful night surrounded by volcanic peaks and quiet mountain air.

Overview — Day 2

  • Distance: ±3.4 km
  • Estimated Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Highest Point: 2,639 meters (Senaru Crater Rim)
  • Elevation Change: –639 meters

Day 2 features a shorter but technical descent from the Senaru Crater Rim into the caldera, leading toward Segara Anak Lake on Mount Rinjani, with rocky terrain and a more relaxed pace compared to Day 1.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3 begins with a peaceful morning beside Segara Anak Lake, one of the most iconic and atmospheric locations on Mount Rinjani. The calm waters, early morning mist, and towering volcanic walls create a serene setting to start the day. After breakfast at the lakeside camp, you’ll have free time to relax, take photos, enjoy the scenery, or visit the nearby natural hot springs once more before continuing the journey.

Unlike the descent on the previous day, today’s route involves a steady and sustained ascent toward the Sembalun Crater Rim. While the distance is relatively short, the trail climbs sharply up the crater wall, making this one of the more physically demanding sections of the trek. For this reason, the hike is taken at a controlled and unhurried pace, allowing proper energy management ahead of the summit attempt early the next morning.

After lunch, the main ascent begins. The trail climbs uphill for approximately 3–4 hours, passing through a mix of rocky and dusty volcanic terrain. As altitude increases, the views gradually open across the Segara Anak basin, with sweeping perspectives of the lake below and the volcanic cone of Mount Barujari. The final approach to the rim is steeper and requires careful footing, but the effort is rewarded with expansive views over the wide Sembalun savannah.

Arrival at Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m)

is typically in the late afternoon, perfectly timed to witness one of the most dramatic sunsets on the mountain. Dinner is prepared at camp, followed by a final summit briefing from your guide, covering pacing, safety, and expectations for the early-morning ascent.

The campsite sits directly above the vast Sembalun Valley, offering open skies, cooler temperatures, and excellent conditions for acclimatization. On clear nights, the lack of light pollution provides outstanding stargazing, making this a memorable and fitting final evening before summit day.

Overview — Day 3

  • Distance: ±3.4 km
  • Estimated Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate (with a steep final section)
  • Highest Point: 2,639 meters (Sembalun Crater Rim)
  • Elevation Gain: +639 meters

Day 3 focuses on a short but demanding uphill climb from Segara Anak Lake to the Sembalun Crater Rim, positioning trekkers for optimal acclimatization and readiness for the summit ascent on Mount Rinjani.

Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 4 is the most anticipated and physically demanding day of the entire trek, culminating in a sunrise ascent to the summit of Mount Rinjani. This final day requires strong mental focus, controlled pacing, and close guidance from the experienced Green Rinjani team—but the rewards are truly extraordinary.

02:30 AM — Wake-Up & Light Breakfast

You will be gently awakened while the mountain is still silent and dark. At this altitude, temperatures typically range between 0°C and 5°C, so warm layers, gloves, a hat, and a headlamp are essential. A light breakfast of hot tea or coffee, biscuits, and bread is served to prepare your body for the summit ascent.

03:00 AM — Summit Push Begins (3.5–4 Hours)

The climb to the summit is the most challenging section of the trek. The trail ascends steeply over loose volcanic gravel and sand, where progress often feels like two steps forward, one step back. As elevation increases, the path narrows and cold winds may be present depending on weather conditions.

The ascent unfolds in three natural stages:

Lower section: A steady but manageable climb across sandy slopes.

Middle ridge: The most demanding stretch, with loose scree, slower progress, and occasional strong winds. Your guide carefully controls the pace to ensure safety and conserve energy.

Final ridge: A narrow summit approach where views begin to open dramatically across Lombok and beyond.

At approximately 06:00 AM, you reach the summit of Mount Rinjani (3,726 m) just in time for sunrise.

From the peak, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across Lombok Island, Mount Agung, Mount Tambora, the vast Segara Anak crater, and the volcanic cone of Mount Barujari. This is a moment for reflection, photography, and celebration at Indonesia’s second-highest volcano.

07:00–08:00 AM — Descent to Sembalun Crater Rim

After spending time at the summit, the descent back to Sembalun Crater Rim begins. Although faster than the ascent, careful footing is still required due to loose gravel. Upon arrival at camp, a hot breakfast is prepared by the Green Rinjani team.

08:30–10:00 AM — Breakfast & Rest at Sembalun Rim

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast with warm drinks while taking in sweeping views over the Sembalun Valley. The open savannah landscape and volcanic ridges offer a striking contrast to the rainforest scenery encountered earlier in the trek. After breakfast, you’ll pack your belongings and prepare for the final descent.

10:00 AM — Descent to Sembalun Village (5–6 Hours)

The descent follows a wide, open trail through rolling hills, volcanic ridges, and expansive grassland savannah. Compared to the Senaru route, this path is gentler on the knees, with excellent visibility and a more open feel. Lunch is served at Pos 2 or Pos 1, depending on the group’s pace.

15:00–16:00 PM — Arrival in Sembalun Village

Your trekking journey officially concludes at the Sembalun Rinjani National Park checkpoint. Your driver will be waiting to transfer you to your next destination, marking the end of an unforgettable 4 Days / 3 Nights Mount Rinjani Summit Adventure.

Overview — Day 4

Summit Push — Sembalun Crater Rim → Summit → Return

  • Estimated Time: 6–7 hours

Descent — Sembalun Crater Rim → Sembalun Village
