Mount Kerinci Climbing Routes

There are two official routes to climb Mount Kerinci.

  1. Kersik Tuo Route (Recommended) This is the most popular and commonly used route. It offers better access, gentler terrain, and supporting facilities, making it suitable for most trekkers.
  2. South Solok Route This route is steeper, less developed, and rarely used. It is recommended only for highly experienced trekkers with strong navigation skills.

For safety and comfort, the Kersik Tuo route is strongly recommended.

How Long Does It Take to Climb Mount Kerinci

From the Kersik Tuo route, the total walking time to reach the summit is approximately 11–12 hours (cumulative).

Typical itineraries:

  • Beginner trekkers: 3 days / 2 nights
  • Experienced trekkers: 2 days / 1 night

A longer itinerary allows better acclimatization, reduces physical stress, and increases the chance of a successful summit.

Overland Transfer to Kerinci

From Padang, the journey to Kerinci takes approximately 7–8 hours by minibus or van. Public transport operates twice daily, with morning departures highly recommended.

From Jambi, travel time is around 12 hours.
From Kerinci Airport, it takes approximately one hour to reach Sungai Penuh city and another two hours to reach Kersik Tuo Village.

Many international travelers include Mount Kerinci as part of a longer Sumatra overland journey, commonly traveling via Medan, Bukit Lawang, Lake Toba, Bukittinggi, and finally Kerinci.
