Torean Trekking Route

Torean Trekking Route – Mount Rinjani Complete Guide

The Torean Trekking Route is one of the most scenic and adventurous trails on Mount Rinjani. Officially opened for trekking in 2020, this route starts from Torean Village (585 meters above sea level) in Loloan, North Lombok. Since its opening, Torean has become a favorite route for trekkers who want to experience Rinjani’s raw natural beauty beyond the classic summit climb.

Compared to the more popular Sembalun and Senaru routes, Torean is quieter, greener, and more dramatic. However, it also requires extra caution due to narrow trails, steep descents, exposed ridges, and river crossings. This route is best suited for trekkers with good balance, stamina, and a love for wild landscapes.

Overview of Trekking via Torean Route

Starting from Torean Village, the trail follows rivers, forest paths, and volcanic terrain toward Segara Anak Lake. The route is commonly used as a descent after summiting Mount Rinjani via Sembalun, but it can also be used as a starting route for lake-focused or non-summit trekking programs.

Elevation gain from Torean Village to the lake is approximately 1,400 meters. While the route does not involve technical climbing, the terrain is uneven and physically demanding.

The Trekking Trail

Lower Section – Jungle and Waterfalls

The trek begins through farmland and tropical rainforest, following riverbanks and shaded forest paths. Early in the hike, trekkers reach Penimbungan Waterfall, a powerful waterfall plunging into a deep valley. This section is cool, green, and rich in natural scenery.

Jurassic Park Cliffs

After the waterfall area, the trail enters a dramatic landscape of towering cliffs, deep valleys, and rocky ridges. The scenery is often compared to prehistoric landscapes. Trails here are narrow and exposed, requiring careful footing and focus.

Propok Campsite (around 1,600 m)

Propok Camp is a wide and flat campsite surrounded by forest and cliffs. It is the main resting point before continuing toward Segara Anak Lake. From here, the environment gradually changes from jungle to volcanic terrain.

Mid and Upper Section – Rivers and Volcanic Terrain

Between Propok Camp and Segara Anak Lake, the trail becomes steeper and more demanding. Trekkers cross rocky ridges, riverbeds, and narrow ledges with steep drop-offs. After rain, the trail can be slippery. Trekking poles and good-grip shoes are highly recommended.

Segara Anak Lake and Hot Springs

The highlight of the Torean route is arriving at Segara Anak Lake, located inside Mount Rinjani’s massive caldera at around 2,000 meters above sea level. Nearby natural hot springs allow trekkers to soak, relax, and recover after long trekking days.
