Trail Conditions — What to Expect on the Sembalun Senaru 3D2N

The Summit Rinjani 3 Days 2 Nights program offers a wide variety of landscapes and trail conditions. Each day presents different challenges, making this trek both physically demanding and highly rewarding for experienced hikers on Mount Rinjani.

Day 1 – Sembalun to Crater Rim
The first day follows mostly dry savanna trails and open grassy plains. The ascent is gradual in the beginning, allowing trekkers to find a steady rhythm. After Pos 3, the trail becomes noticeably steeper, with volcanic sand and loose rocks leading toward the Sembalun Crater Rim. This section requires good balance and steady pacing.

Day 2 – Summit Push
Summit day is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail consists of extremely steep volcanic scree made up of loose gravel and sand. Every step forward may slide slightly backward, demanding strong stamina, mental focus, and determination. Proper trekking shoes and trekking poles are highly recommended for safety and efficiency.

Descent to Segara Anak Lake
After reaching the summit, the route descends back to the crater rim and continues down to Segara Anak Lake. This section is steep and rocky, with dusty and uneven terrain. When dry, the loose surface can be slippery, requiring careful foot placement throughout the descent.

Day 3 – Exit via Senaru
The final day leads through dense tropical rainforest. The trail is mostly shaded with softer ground, but the long and continuous descent of nearly 2,000 meters can be demanding on the knees. Expect tree roots, rocks, and uneven steps along the way. During the rainy season, some sections may become muddy and slippery.

Why You’ll Love the Sembalun Senaru 3D2N

The Summit Rinjani 3 Days 2 Nights trek is considered the ultimate adventure on Mount Rinjani, as it combines every major highlight into one complete journey. This program covers both the Sembalun and Senaru routes, takes you all the way to the summit, brings you down to Segara Anak Lake, and includes time to relax at the natural hot springs beside the crater lake.

One of the most memorable moments of this trek is the summit sunrise. From the peak at 3,726 meters, you are rewarded with wide panoramic views across Lombok, Bali, Sumbawa, and the dramatic Segara Anak Lake far below. The sense of space and scale from the summit makes the early morning climb truly worthwhile.

After the demanding summit push, the trek offers a rare chance to soak tired muscles in natural hot springs near the lake. This contrast between intense physical challenge and deep relaxation is one of the reasons many trekkers consider this route the most satisfying Rinjani experience.

The landscapes throughout the journey are incredibly diverse. Within just three days, you will pass through dry savanna hills, volcanic ridges, a massive crater lake, and lush tropical rainforest. Each day feels different, keeping the trek engaging from start to finish.

The program is fully supported by experienced local guides and porters. Meals, tents, camping equipment, and eco-friendly trekking practices are all included, allowing you to focus on the adventure itself while trekking responsibly in the national park.

Advantages of the Sembalun Senaru 3D2N

This program allows you to reach the highest point of Mount Rinjani at 3,726 meters, a major goal for many mountain trekkers. You experience both sides of the mountain by ascending via Sembalun and descending through Senaru, giving a more complete perspective of the terrain.

The trek offers unforgettable moments such as sunrise at the summit and sunset views over Segara Anak Lake. You also have the opportunity to visit the crater lake and relax in natural hot springs, which is not included in shorter summit programs. With professional guides and porters, the trek is well-organized and supported from start to finish.

Disadvantages to Consider

The Summit Rinjani 3D2N trek is very physically demanding and requires excellent fitness. The summit trail is steep, rocky, and slippery, especially during the night climb to the peak. The high elevation and relatively fast ascent increase the risk of altitude-related discomfort for some trekkers.

Camping conditions at high altitude can be very cold, particularly at the crater rim and summit camps. This program is not suitable for beginners, people with low fitness levels, or those who are uncomfortable with steep terrain and exposed mountain paths.

Why Planting Trees and Why GREEN Rinjani?

Together with our guests, Green Rinjani actively contributes to environmental protection through tree planting and eco-trekking initiatives around Mount Rinjani.

Planting trees helps restore forest ecosystems, improves soil stability, and reduces the risk of forest fires and erosion in vulnerable mountain areas. Every tree planted today plays a role in protecting water sources and biodiversity for future generations.

GREEN Rinjani is not just a name—it reflects our long-term commitment to responsible trekking. Through optional tree planting and regular mountain clean-up programs, we ensure that every trek gives back to the environment and local communities.

Day 01 — Senaru to Sembalun and Trek to Crater Rim Sembalun

The first trekking day begins with breakfast at our base in Senaru. At around 7:00 AM, you will transfer by vehicle to Sembalun Village, a scenic drive of approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Upon arrival, registration is completed at the Rinjani Information Center at an altitude of 1,051 meters before starting the trek on Mount Rinjani.

The trek starts with a steady walk across open grassland toward Pos 1, also known as Pos Pemantauan, located at 1,300 meters. This section takes about two hours and allows trekkers to warm up and find a comfortable pace. A short rest is taken at Pos 1 before continuing.

From Pos 1, the trail continues gently uphill for about one hour to Pos 2, Tengengean, at 1,500 meters. Another short break is taken here. The next section toward Pos 3, Pada Balong, becomes gradually steeper and takes around one hour. Pos 3, located at 1,800 meters, is the lunch stop for the day, followed by a longer rest of approximately two hours to prepare for the afternoon climb.

In the afternoon, the ascent continues toward Crater Rim Sembalun, also known as Plawangan Sembalun, at 2,639 meters. This final section takes around three hours and is considered the most challenging part of the day due to the steep terrain known as the Seven Hills. As you climb higher, vegetation becomes thinner and panoramic views begin to open up across the landscape.

Upon reaching the crater rim, you are rewarded with stunning views overlooking Segara Anak Lake, as well as Mount Agung in Bali on clear days. Sunset at the crater rim is one of the highlights of the trek. Dinner is served at camp, and you will spend the night camping on the crater rim under the mountain sky.

Overview — Day 1 (Sembalun Route)

The total trekking distance on Day 1 is approximately nine kilometers, with an average walking time of six to seven hours excluding rest stops. The difficulty level ranges from moderate to difficult, especially on the Seven Hills section. The highest point reached is Crater Rim Sembalun at 2,639 meters, with a total elevation gain of approximately 1,639 meters from the starting point.

Day 2 Overview — Summit Day and Crater Lake Experience

The summit attempt begins very early in the morning. At around 2:30 AM, you will wake up and enjoy a light breakfast before starting the climb toward the summit of Mount Rinjani. The ascent takes approximately three hours and twenty minutes, following steep volcanic slopes covered with loose sand and gravel. Although physically demanding, reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable moment, offering panoramic views across Lombok, Bali, Sumbawa, and Segara Anak Lake far below.

After spending time at the summit, you descend carefully back to the crater rim. Breakfast is served at camp, followed by a short rest before continuing the journey. The trail then leads down toward Segara Anak Lake, a descent that takes around three hours. This section features rocky paths, narrow ridges, and several sections equipped with iron ladders, making the route both challenging and exciting.

Lunch is prepared by the lakeside, allowing time to relax and enjoy the dramatic caldera surroundings. Just a short walk of about one hundred meters from the lake, you will find the natural hot springs. Soaking in the warm volcanic water is one of the highlights of the trek and provides excellent recovery after the demanding summit climb.

In the afternoon, the ascent continues toward Crater Rim Senaru. This climb takes approximately three hours and gradually opens up wide views of the caldera as you gain altitude. Upon reaching the crater rim, camp is set up in time to enjoy sunset views toward Mount Agung on clear days. Dinner is served at camp, followed by rest and overnight at the Senaru crater rim.

Day 2 — Summit to Segara Anak Lake

Distance is approximately three kilometers. The estimated trekking time for this section is between three and four hours, depending on pace and trail conditions. The difficulty level is considered difficult due to steep terrain and loose volcanic material. The highest point on this section is around 2,639 meters, with a total elevation loss of approximately 639 meters as you descend toward Segara Anak Lake.

Day 2 — Segara Anak Lake to Senaru Crater Rim

This section covers a distance of approximately three kilometers. The estimated trekking time ranges from three to four hours. The difficulty level is difficult, mainly due to the continuous uphill climb from the lake to the crater rim. The highest point reached is Senaru Crater Rim at around 2,641 meters, with a total elevation gain of approximately 641 meters.

Day 3 Overview — Final Descent via Senaru Route

Wake up early to enjoy sunrise from Crater Rim Senaru, with wide views overlooking Segara Anak Lake and the surrounding mountain peaks on Mount Rinjani. After breakfast, the final descent toward Senaru Village begins.

The trail initially passes through open grassy slopes before gradually entering dense tropical rainforest. As you descend, the environment becomes cooler and more shaded, offering a refreshing contrast after the higher-altitude sections of the trek.

Lunch is prepared along the way, usually near Pos 2 or Pos Extra, depending on trekking speed and group conditions. The total descent typically takes between five and six hours, with a steady downhill trail that can be demanding on the knees.

Arrival at the Senaru Rinjani Trekking Centre is usually around 1:00 PM. After completing the trek, your luggage will be prepared by our team, and transfer is provided to your next destination, such as Bangsal Harbor, Senggigi, or Mataram.

Day 3 Technical Summary

The total trekking distance on Day 3 is approximately seven and a half kilometers. The estimated trekking time is between five and six hours. The difficulty level is moderate, mainly due to the long descent. The highest point reached on this day is Crater Rim Senaru at around 2,641 meters, with a total elevation loss of approximately 1,841 meters down to Senaru Village.
