Mount Rinjani Summit Trek 4 Days 3 Nights – Complete and Comfortable Adventure (3,726 m)

Trek Overview — Relaxed Summit Journey from Sembalun to Senaru

The Mount Rinjani Summit Start from Sembalun Senaru 4D3N is designed for trekkers who want to experience the full beauty of Mount Rinjani at a more relaxed and enjoyable pace. This program is suitable for well-prepared beginners, families, and adventure-seeking travelers who wish to reach the summit without rushing, while still experiencing all of Rinjani’s most iconic highlights.

The trek starts from Sembalun Village, where the trail crosses wide savanna slopes on the eastern side of Rinjani. This gradual ascent allows trekkers to adapt comfortably before continuing toward the crater rim. From there, the route descends to the stunning Segara Anak Lake, where time is allocated to explore the caldera and relax in the natural hot springs beside the lake.

After the lake experience, the journey continues toward Senaru Crater Rim and descends through the lush northern rainforest. This transition from open savanna to dense tropical forest creates a complete mountain experience from peak to valley. The trek finishes in Senaru Village, offering a true east-to-north traverse of Mount Rinjani and allowing trekkers to experience both contrasting landscapes in one continuous journey.

Standing at 3,726 meters, Mount Rinjani is Indonesia’s second-highest volcano and one of Southeast Asia’s most impressive peaks. Throughout this four-day adventure, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping views of Lombok, Bali, Sumbawa, and the deep blue waters of Segara Anak Lake.

From open grasslands and dramatic crater ridgelines to rejuvenating hot springs and peaceful forest descents, this Sembalun Senaru 4D3N summit program offers a balanced combination of challenge, comfort, natural beauty, and unforgettable sunrise moments from the summit.

Day 1 — Hotel / Senaru → Sembalun → Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m)

Your adventure on Mount Rinjani begins early in the morning at Green Rinjani Guest House in Senaru Village, located at 601 meters above sea level. The air is cool, and the village is just starting to wake up.

At 06:00 AM, you wake up and prepare for the journey. Breakfast is served at the guest house while your guide and porters organize camping equipment, food supplies, and trekking logistics.

At 07:00 AM, you depart by vehicle from Senaru to Sembalun Village at 1,156 meters. The scenic drive takes around 30 to 40 minutes, passing rice fields, traditional villages, and wide open landscapes, with Mount Rinjani gradually appearing in the distance.

Upon arrival in Sembalun, your guide completes registration at the Rinjani Information Center and provides a safety briefing. This briefing covers the trekking route, pacing, rest points, and important trail conditions for the day.

At 08:30 AM, the trek officially begins. The trail starts gently across Sembalun’s wide savanna. The terrain is mostly flat at first, allowing trekkers to warm up and find a comfortable rhythm. Sun exposure can be strong, so sun protection is important.

At 10:00 AM, you arrive at Pos 1 (1,300 m) for a short rest. This is a good time to hydrate and adjust your pace while enjoying the peaceful rural scenery.

At 10:10 AM, the trek continues toward Pos 2 (1,500 m). The trail gradually becomes steeper, rolling uphill through open grassy hills.
At 11:00 AM, you reach Pos 2, where a longer break is taken. Snacks and drinks are served while you enjoy wider views of the Sembalun Valley below.

At 11:15 AM, you continue trekking to Pos 3 (1,800 m

This section takes about one hour and involves steady uphill walking through low bushes and volcanic soil.
At 12:30 PM, you arrive at Pos 3, where lunch is prepared by the porters. A longer rest of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours is essential to recover energy before the afternoon climb.

After lunch, the ascent toward Sembalun Crater Rim begins through a series of steep hills known locally as Tujuh Bukit or the Seven Hills. Each hill feels progressively more demanding. The final section, Bukit Penyesalan or the “Hill of Regret,” is the most challenging part of the day.

As you gain altitude, temperatures become cooler and the landscape more dramatic. Golden savanna stretches far below while the summit ridge rises above.

Between 3:30 and 4:00 PM, you arrive at Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m). From here, Segara Anak Lake and Mount Baru Jari lie deep inside the massive caldera. Your porters set up camp while you enjoy hot tea or coffee and watch the sunset over the volcanic landscape.

Dinner is served as temperatures drop to around 8–10°C. Warm clothing is essential. You rest early in preparation for the summit climb before dawn.

Day 1 Overview — Sembalun Route

  • Meals: Breakfast at the guest house, lunch and dinner on the mountain
  • Distance: approximately 9 km
  • Duration: 6–7 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult (Seven Hills)
  • Highest point: 2,639 m
  • Elevation gain: +1,639 m

Day 2 — Summit (3,726 m) → Segara Anak Lake (2,000 m)

The summit day begins very early in the cold mountain darkness on Mount Rinjani.

At 02:00–02:30 AM, you wake up and prepare for the summit attempt. A light breakfast of biscuits, bananas, and hot drinks helps warm the body and provide initial energy for the climb ahead.

At 02:30 AM, the summit ascent begins. The trail consists of loose volcanic sand and gravel, where each step forward may slide slightly backward. Progress is slow and physically demanding, requiring patience, steady breathing, and strong mental focus.

As dawn approaches, the sky gradually changes color, offering motivation with every step upward.
Between 05:30 and 06:00 AM, you reach the summit of Mount Rinjani at 3,726 meters.

Standing on Lombok’s highest point is an unforgettable achievement. From the summit, you are rewarded with a 360-degree sunrise panorama over Lombok Island, Mount Agung in Bali, Mount Tambora in Sumbawa, and the vast caldera far below.

After spending time at the summit for photos and quiet reflection, you begin the careful descent back toward the crater rim.

Between 06:30 and 08:00 AM, you return to the crater rim camp for a hot breakfast and a short rest before continuing the journey.

At 09:30 AM, the descent toward Segara Anak Lake begins. This section is steep and technical, with loose rocks, narrow paths, and uneven footing that require extra care. Despite the challenge, the view of the turquoise lake below becomes more impressive with every step.

At 12:30 PM, you arrive at Segara Anak Lake at approximately 2,000 meters. Lunch is served by the lakeshore, surrounded by towering crater walls and the dramatic presence of Mount Baru Jari.

In the afternoon, you visit the nearby natural hot springs to soak tired muscles in warm, mineral-rich water. This is one of the most relaxing moments of the entire trek.

Dinner is served by the lake as night falls. Temperatures here are milder than at the crater rim, allowing for a comfortable and restful night beneath a star-filled sky.

Day 2 Overview — Summit Push

  • Distance: approximately 5 km
  • Estimated trekking time: 5–6 hours
  • Difficulty level: Very Difficult
  • Highest point: 3,726 m
  • Elevation gain: +1,087 m
  • Elevation loss: −1,087 m

Day 3 — Segara Anak Lake (2,000 m) → Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m)

The morning at Segara Anak Lake is calm and unhurried on Mount Rinjani. You wake naturally, enjoy breakfast by the lakeshore, and take time to absorb the peaceful atmosphere of the crater basin surrounded by towering volcanic walls.

After lunch, the ascent toward Senaru Crater Rim begins. This section is steep and rocky, with iron ladders assisting in the most vertical parts of the trail. Steady pacing and careful footing are essential throughout the climb.

As you gain altitude, the views become increasingly dramatic. The turquoise lake below slowly reveals its full scale, framed by high cliffs and rugged volcanic terrain.

Between 03:30 and 04:00 PM, you arrive at Plawangan Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m). The viewpoint from Senaru Crater Rim is considered one of Rinjani’s finest, especially in the late afternoon when the sun sets and the sky turns shades of orange and pink.

Day 3 Overview — Segara Anak Lake to Senaru Crater Rim

  • Distance: approximately 2.5 km
  • Duration: 3–4 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Highest point: 2,641 m (Senaru Crater Rim)

Day 4 — Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m) → Senaru Village (601 m)

The final day begins with breakfast at the crater rim, offering one last panoramic view across the vast caldera before starting the descent.

At 07:00 AM, you begin the long descent through Senaru’s tropical rainforest. The environment gradually shifts from open volcanic terrain to dense jungle filled with birds, insects, and towering trees.

The trail is shaded and cooler, but tree roots, rocks, and occasionally damp forest paths require careful footing. Despite the long downhill section, the refreshing forest atmosphere makes this part of the trek enjoyable.

After a lunch break at Pos 1, the descent continues toward Senaru Village.
Between 12:30 and 01:30 PM, you arrive in Senaru Village. After changing clothes and taking time to refresh, your driver transfers you to your next destination.

Day 4 Overview — Descent to Senaru Village

  • Distance: approximately 7.5 km
  • Estimated trekking time: 5–6 hours
  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • Highest point: 2,641 m
  • Elevation loss: −1,841 m
