Key Differences Compared to the 4D3N Trek

Duration and Pace

Segara Anak Lake Experience
You will spend two nights at Segara Anak Lake instead of one. This gives more time to enjoy the hot springs and explore nearby trails. You can relax by the lakeshore and fully experience the volcanic landscape.

Better Rest and Acclimatization
The slower ascent and additional rest day improve safety and comfort. This is especially beneficial for first-time trekkers or those who prefer a less demanding pace.

Overall Journey
The longer route allows deeper immersion in Mount Rinjani’s landscapes. You will explore savanna hills, crater rims, volcanic formations, and rainforest descents. The Sembalun Senaru 5D4N trek allows more time to enjoy each viewpoint and moment along the trail.

The trail conditions on the Sembalun Senaru 5D4N trek are highly

varied and change significantly from day to day, offering a complete and immersive mountain experience on Mount Rinjani.

The trek begins on the eastern side of the mountain with wide, open savanna and gently rolling hills around Sembalun. These early sections are mostly dry and exposed, with gradual elevation gain that allows trekkers to adapt comfortably. As the route approaches the crater rim, the terrain becomes steeper with volcanic soil, loose sand, and rocky paths.

The summit section is the most demanding part of the trek. The trail consists of steep volcanic scree made up of loose gravel and sand, where footing can be unstable and progress requires patience, balance, and strong stamina. Early-morning cold temperatures and wind add to the challenge.

After the summit, the trail descends sharply toward Segara Anak Lake. This section is rocky and uneven, with narrow paths and some technical parts, but rewards trekkers with dramatic views of the caldera and lake below. Around the lake, the terrain becomes more stable, with compact soil and short walking sections suitable for exploration and rest.

The final part of the trek descends via Senaru, passing through dense tropical rainforest. These trails are shaded and cooler but can be muddy or slippery during the rainy season. Tree roots, stone steps, and long downhill sections require careful footing, especially toward the end of the trek.

The overall trail character of the Sembalun Senaru 5D4N trek

can be described as challenging yet comfortable, thanks to its extended duration and well-balanced pacing.

While the trek includes physically demanding sections—especially the summit climb and crater rim ascents—the additional days allow for proper rest, acclimatization, and recovery. This makes the journey more manageable compared to shorter summit programs, even for first-time Rinjani trekkers with good fitness.

The route offers exceptional landscape diversity, moving from dry savanna and volcanic ridges to crater lakes, hot springs, and lush rainforest. Each day feels distinct, keeping the trek engaging and mentally rewarding throughout the journey.

Overall, this trek is best suited for trekkers who want a complete Mount Rinjani experience without rushing. It combines physical challenge, scenic variety, cultural significance, and comfort, making it the most immersive and well-rounded way to explore Mount Rinjani from Sembalun to Senaru.

Day 1 — Senaru → Sembalun → Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m)

Your Mount Rinjani adventure begins early in the morning at Green Rinjani Guest House in Senaru Village, located at 601 meters above sea level. At this hour, the mountain air is still cool and the village is just waking up, creating a calm and refreshing start to the journey on Mount Rinjani.

06:00 AM – Wake up and prepare for the journey. After a refreshing morning routine, you will enjoy breakfast at the guest house while your guide and porters carefully organize camping equipment, food supplies, and trekking logistics.

07:00 AM – Depart from Senaru to Sembalun Village (1,156 m).

The scenic drive takes approximately 30–40 minutes, passing rice fields, traditional villages, and wide open landscapes, with Mount Rinjani gradually revealing itself in the distance.

Upon arrival in Sembalun, registration is completed at the Rinjani Information Center. Your guide then provides a safety briefing, explaining the trekking route, daily pacing, rest points, and important trail conditions for the day.

08:30 AM – The trek begins. The trail starts gently across Sembalun’s vast savanna, where open grasslands and wide skies create a strong sense of scale. The terrain is mostly flat at first, allowing you to warm up and settle into a comfortable rhythm. Sun exposure can be strong in this section, so sun protection is important.

10:00 AM – Arrive at Pos 1 (1,300 m). A short rest

allows time to hydrate and adjust your pace. The surrounding rural scenery is peaceful, with farmers and grazing buffalo often visible in the distance.

10:10 AM – Continue trekking to Pos 2 (1,500 m). The trail gradually becomes steeper, rolling uphill through grassy hills and open terrain.

11:00 AM – Arrive at Pos 2 (1,500 m). A longer break is taken here. Snacks and drinks are served while you enjoy wider views of the Sembalun Valley stretching far below.

11:15 AM – Continue trekking to Pos 3 (1,800 m). This section takes around one hour, with steady uphill walking through low bushes and volcanic soil.

12:30 PM – Arrive at Pos 3 (1,800 m). Lunch is prepared by the porters, offering a well-earned rest. This longer break of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours is essential to restore energy before the most demanding part of the day.

After lunch, the ascent toward Plawangan Sembalun begins through a series of steep hills known locally as Tujuh Bukit, or the Seven Hills. Each hill feels progressively more challenging, testing both physical endurance and mental focus.

The final section, known as Bukit Penyesalan or the “Hill of Regret,” is the toughest part of the climb. Step by step, the trail finally opens up as you approach the crater rim.

As you gain altitude, temperatures become cooler and the scenery more dramatic. Golden savanna landscapes stretch endlessly below, while the summit ridge rises above the caldera.

03:30–04:00 PM – Arrive at Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m).

Reaching the crater rim is a moment of relief and awe. From here, Segara Anak Lake and Mount Baru Jari lie far below inside the massive volcanic caldera.

Your porters set up camp while you relax with hot tea or coffee, watching the afternoon light fade into a spectacular sunset. Dinner is served as temperatures drop to around 8–10°C. Warm clothing is essential. You then rest early in preparation for the summit climb before dawn.

02:30 AM – Begin the summit ascent. The trail is steep and challenging, consisting of loose volcanic sand and gravel. Each step forward often slides slightly back, requiring patience, balance, and steady breathing.

05:30–06:00 AM – Reach the summit of Mount Rinjani (3,726 m).

Standing on Lombok’s highest point is an unforgettable achievement. From the summit, enjoy a 360-degree sunrise panorama over Lombok Island, Bali, Sumbawa, and the vast caldera below.

After spending time at the summit for photos and quiet moments, begin the careful descent back toward the crater rim.

06:30–08:00 AM – Return to Sembalun Crater Rim. A hot breakfast is served at camp, followed by a short rest before continuing the journey.

12:30–01:30 PM – Arrive at Senaru Village (601 m). At this point, you complete the full Sembalun–Senaru traverse of Mount Rinjani.
