Overall Trail Character — Advantages & Disadvantages

(Sembalun–Torean Summit 3D2N)

The Sembalun–Torean Summit 3D2N trek is a full mountain traverse that combines high-altitude challenge with dramatic landscape transitions. This route is designed for trekkers who want to experience Mount Rinjani from its wide eastern savanna to the deep western valleys, without repeating the same trail.

The journey begins on open savanna slopes in Sembalun, where long, exposed climbs test endurance rather than technical skill. It then reaches the summit zone, characterized by steep volcanic scree, cold temperatures, and strong winds. After the summit, the trail descends into the vast caldera and continues through Segara Anak Lake before finishing with a spectacular jungle and river descent via the Torean Valley.

Advantages

  • Complete Rinjani Traverse
Start in Sembalun and finish in Torean, experiencing entirely different landscapes without backtracking.
  • Summit + Lake + Valley in One Trek
Combines the 3,726 m summit, Segara Anak Lake, natural hot springs, and the scenic Torean Valley.
  • Diverse Landscapes
Savanna hills, volcanic ridges, crater lake, waterfalls, rivers, and tropical rainforest in a single route.
  • One-Way Descent via Torean
More scenic and varied than returning via the same Sembalun trail.
  • Well-Balanced Adventure
Challenging but rewarding, ideal for trekkers who want more than just a summit photo.

Disadvantages

  • Very Physically Demanding
Long distances, steep summit terrain, and continuous descents require excellent fitness.
  • Extreme Summit Conditions
Cold temperatures, strong winds, and loose volcanic sand during the summit push.
  • Challenging Downhill Sections
The Torean Valley descent includes rocky paths, river crossings, and slippery terrain after rain.
  • Not Beginner-Friendly
Not suitable for first-time trekkers or those with limited mountain experience.
  • Limited Mobile Signal
Mobile coverage is minimal or unavailable for most of the trek.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the mountain

Day 2 is the most varied and memorable day of the Senaru–Torean Lake 3D2N trek, combining volcanic valleys, the sacred crater lake, natural hot springs, and a steady climb to the Sembalun Crater Rim.

Morning at Torean Camp

06:00 AM – Wake up at Torean Camp
Enjoy a peaceful jungle morning surrounded by river sounds and cool mountain air.

06:30 AM – Breakfast at camp
After breakfast, your guide briefs the group about the route, river crossings, and the ascent to the crater rim later in the day.

07:30 AM – Start trekking toward Segara Anak Lake
The trail follows dramatic volcanic valleys and riverbeds, gradually opening into the massive caldera of Mount Rinjani.

Along the way, expect:

  • Rocky paths and river crossings
  • Steep valley walls and volcanic formations
  • Natural hot water streams flowing through the rocks

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM – Arrive at Segara Anak Lake (2,000 m)
The turquoise lake sits beneath towering crater walls, with Mount Barujari rising from its center.

Lake Time & Hot Springs

Lunch by the lakeshore
After lunch, enjoy free time to relax and explore the area.

Activities include:

  • Visiting the natural hot springs (short walk from the camp)
  • Soaking tired muscles in warm, mineral-rich water
  • Resting, swimming, or photography around the lake

Ascent to Sembalun Crater Rim

02:30–03:00 PM – Begin ascent to Sembalun Crater Rim
The trail climbs steadily from the lake toward the eastern crater rim. This section is steep and rocky but well-defined, requiring steady pacing and focus.

As you climb higher, views of Segara Anak Lake become increasingly dramatic.

05:30–06:00 PM – Arrive at Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m)
From the campsite, enjoy sweeping views over the caldera, Mount Barujari, and distant peaks.

Your porters set up camp while you relax with hot drinks and enjoy the sunset.

Day 3 — Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m) → Sembalun Village (1,156 m)

Breakfast on the mountain – lunch in Sembalun

Descent via Sembalun Route

07:30 AM – Begin descent to Sembalun Village
The trail descends gradually at first before continuing through long savanna slopes and rolling hills. Although technically easier than summit routes, the extended downhill can be tiring on the knees.

  • Pos 3 (1,800 m) – short rest
  • Pos 2 (1,500 m) – longer break
  • Pos 1 (1,300 m) – final rest stop

The open terrain means sun exposure can be strong, so hats and sunscreen are recommended.
