Mount Rinjani Crater Rim Trek
The Senaru Route to Mount Rinjani Crater Rim
- DURATION: 1DAY
- LEVEL: Challenging
- DURATION: 2day 1 night
- LEVEL: Medium
All Green Rinjani crater rim trekking programs begin and end in Senaru Village on the northern side of Mount Rinjani.
The trail starts at approximately 601 meters above sea level and climbs steadily through dense tropical rainforest. Much of the lower trail is shaded by large trees, but the humid conditions and continuous elevation gain can still make the trek physically demanding.
As the trail reaches a higher elevation, the forest gradually opens toward the mountain area near Senaru Crater Rim. From here, trekkers can look down toward Segara Anak Lake and see Mount Barujari inside the Rinjani caldera.

The trek does not descend to Segara Anak Lake and does not visit the natural hot springs.
Which Crater Rim Trek Should You Choose?
Green Rinjani offers a One Day Trek and a 2 Days 1 Night Crater Rim Trek. Both programs use the Senaru route, but the pace and experience are different.
Mount Rinjani One Day Trek
The One Day Trek is designed for active travelers who want a short Mount Rinjani experience without staying overnight on the mountain.
The trek follows the Senaru rainforest trail toward a high crater viewpoint before returning to Senaru on the same day. Because the ascent and descent must be completed within one day, the walking pace is faster than the overnight program.
This program is best for:
- Active travelers with good fitness
- Visitors with limited time in Lombok
- Hikers who do not want to camp overnight
- Travelers comfortable with several hours of uphill hiking
- Guests interested in the Senaru rainforest and crater scenery
Although it is the shorter option, the One Day Trek can still be physically demanding because of the continuous climb and same-day descent.
Mount Rinjani Crater Rim Trek 2 Days 1 Night
The 2 Days 1 Night Trek provides a more complete Mount Rinjani crater rim experience.
On the first day, trekkers climb through the Senaru rainforest and continue toward Senaru Crater Rim. After arriving at the campsite, guests can rest and enjoy sunset views over the Rinjani caldera.
The following morning, trekkers can watch the sunrise before descending through the same Senaru route.
This program is best for:
- First-time Mount Rinjani trekkers
- Beginner-to-intermediate hikers with reasonable fitness
- Travelers who want an overnight camping experience
- Guests who want to enjoy sunset and sunrise
- Couples, friends, and small groups
- Travelers who prefer a more balanced trekking pace
For most travelers, the 2 Days 1 Night program is the recommended crater rim option.

Who Should Choose Another Rinjani Program?
The crater rim trek may not match every trekking goal.
Choose a Mount Rinjani Summit Trek when your main goal is reaching the 3,726-meter summit.
Choose a Lake and Hot Springs Trek when you want to descend to Segara Anak Lake, camp near the lake, and visit the natural hot springs.
The Crater Rim Trek does not include:
- Mount Rinjani summit
- Descent to Segara Anak Lake
- Natural hot springs
- Torean Valley
- Sembalun trekking route
Its main focus is the Senaru rainforest, crater rim views, and mountain camping.
Mount Rinjani Crater Rim Trek Difficulty
The Mount Rinjani Crater Rim Trek is generally rated as moderate to difficult.
It does not include the summit, but trekkers still climb from Senaru Village at approximately 601 meters to a high mountain area near Senaru Crater Rim.
The main challenges include:
- Several hours of continuous uphill walking
- Significant elevation gain
- Humid rainforest conditions
- Tree roots and uneven ground
- Muddy or slippery trails after rain
- Cooler temperatures at higher elevations
- A long descent back to Senaru
- Faster pacing on the One Day Trek
Walking time depends on the chosen program, weather, trail conditions, group pace, rest time, and individual fitness.

Rain can make the trail muddy and slippery. Meanwhile, conditions near the crater rim may be cooler, windy, or foggy.
Mountain weather can change quickly. Therefore, trekkers should carry rain protection and warm clothing even when the weather appears clear at the starting point.
The guide may adjust the walking pace or itinerary when weather and trail conditions require it.
